Couldn't think of a good title. This is my son. It was a photo I took while at the beach. When I first shot it I was not thinking of any challenge. Loved the shot so I decided to try my hand at a candid portrait. I am sure I will get dinged on the shadows under the eyes but that is tough. I tried to lessen them and felt it only made them look worse. I still love the photo and hope everyone else does too. I didn't do any extensive post processing. First time I did the boy didn't look natural. So I went back to the original skin color which some may think is yellow but that is what my son looks like. He has olive skin when he tans.

1. selective color (to enhance the background of the ocean)
2. saturation (to further enhance the background of the ocean)
3. whitened the whites of his eyes a teeny bit to make his already deep dark brown stand out.
4. noise ninja
5. usm
6. resized
7. saved for web

Since this was in the middle of the day and kids are active I shot this on automatic settings.

POST: Thank you for all your comments. For those who didn't think this was candid. It was. I did not set this shot up. I was sitting in my chair looking for birds to shoot. My son came up to get his board. On a moments notice I yelled his name and he looked at me and I took the picture. I had the big lens on so that is why I got such a close up. If it was set up then he wouldn't have had the lone ranger mask.

I love the detail in this photo of your handsome son. I often take photos of my kids with the flash on (even at the beach!) to get the "catch lights" in their eyes.

Watch the "lone ranger mask" shadows under eyes and nose.

Great Capture! It's always difficult to take a photo of someone in broad daylight, but you have done very well here. I like the way the shadows fall on his face. Nice and crisp with vivid colors. What a cute boy! Good background blur and yet you can tell it's the ocean back there.

Right then, joke's on me as I now have to plough through 564 images and bump them all (yes, all of them) up. There'll be a third run through for fine tuning. It's day two now and I'm running late, sorry.

Not sure about the candid, but he's looking good. Fill-in flash might have helped there (and it might not :)) 6

Great colors! Blue and green background and yellowish and pinkish with face and lips... just a nice combination.
