Two hours before the challenge ends,
I wanted to submit more powerful picture, but got extremely busy with work. I wanted to get into the habit of not missing a challenge. I don’t have high expectations for this one, I would expect it to score 6.
Settings:
In my powder room: Oil lamp, on a shelf, fixed a reflector on the shelf above it. Office lamp on the floor beneath the tripod, covered the light with a newspaper to dim the light. Used a remote shutter. Was blowing a cigaret smoke to give the smoke effect and that’s it.
Steps:
Cropped and rotated.
converted from RAW,
USM
Neat Image.
Save for the web.

Last minute challenge entries tend to be tough ones. I have been there and done that with less than stellar results as well.

I will be up front and tell you I voted a 4 on this. I think the first thing that hurts you is that the main part of the image - the eyes - dont really fall into a section of thirds. Most people (including myself) were probably looking for the main focal point to fall along the crosshairs of thirds if you were to make a grid of nine blocks on the image. I se ethat your eyes do fall on one of the lines of thirds, but compositions where the focus hit the cross hairs tend to be more powerful.

The subject itself I find a bit uninteresting. It sounds as though you did quite a setup, creative use of light and the attempt at smoke to enhance, but the image overall just seems a bit flat. The colors arent really pleasing and the general compostion seems off. It may have been better had the face in front been an equal disctance between your two objects behind. The way it is now it feels unbalanced. And I do realize that the objeect is a stand for the bowl, but the glass bowl isnt flattering to the image either.

All of this said - welcome back to DPC. It looks like you took some time off from when you first started entering and your Night Shot entry looks great and did quite well. The goal to try and enter as many challenges as you can should push you along to considerable growth and strectch you out quite well. At the same time trying to enter as many as possible will lead to a stinker or two (trust me - I know. I have entered on average more than 2 images a week for over a year and I sure can pull out some bad ones). Keep shooting, keep entering, keep researching and experimenting and most of all ask questions. Most people here are more than willing to lend a hand when asked. And most of all - have fun!

Dear Tim,
I would've been really annoyed if your harsh words came alone without some positive critiques, critisizm and advises. Thats said, I really appreciate your feed back, your advices and criticism is more than welcomed and highly appreciated as well.
What really set boundaries to me is the basic editing, this is known in basic editing challenges, which force me to focus more on photography skills.
I totally agree with you on all what you said, all your words taken in a positive way,
Can't thank you enough for the time spent writing your critique.
Thanks a million, hopefully in next challenges I will do better,
My kindest regards,
Ameed,

A bit too flat contrast wise and white balance too warm for my taste.

The vase/bowl seems a little awkward sitting on top like that.
