Awesome shot Kel! Love the makeup! Very goth feel to it. It has that klstover feel to it. (which is what I call your pictures when I spot them, LOL). |

I love this very much. The selective blur is interesting. |

i was going to ask you where you got the makeup from lol - cuz i wanted to check it out. ok you know, with the title and the makeup, i get this goth feel to it. So that makes me expect to see darker tones overall. The white contrast with the dark makeup I guess does not work for me. I think the tilt is fine, love the makeup and softness, I guess it is just the overall tones of lightness that doesn't seem to blend together. STill, a very interesting piece! |

Kelly i really like the angle. To makeup is cool, you must be good at post editing to apply makeup like that |

Kelly, this is a great shot. The angle really adds to the overall feel of the image. The colors are very nice. You should be proud of this shot. Good job. BTW, you got robbed big time. |

Greetings from the Critique Club -
Very interesting image. Even more so when I look at your details and info. Handheld for 2 seconds? Excellent job at keeping still. You did real at keeping the shake down which allowed you the detail to be pretty smooth. And I will also add that I never would have guessed that the makeup was added in postprocess. That too looks pretty clean. I would be interested in seeing what the original looks like.
That said, the image itself is a bit out of the DPC expectations especially for the higher scores. But knowing where you hang out (Team Suck) and having visited your portfolio more than once or twice I also know you arent shooting for mass DPC approval - you are shooting for you. And that I do appreciate.
Looking down now at your other comments (and quite a slew of them for only a couple of hours after the challenge) You have gotten some great feedback and some really good ideas as well. Levyj413's ideas about a multipanel, multicolor shot could really be a great way to use this image.
Overall though, I guess I am not sure how to comment on this. Because this is more of an artistic piece than the typical DPC eyecandy, who am I to tell you how to make it better? This is your art. Where in other pics I could say that the bug needed to be sharper, or the DOF should have been more shallow, or colors more saturated, I believe that this image is all yours. This is your artwork. I am cool with it as it is.
Keep up the good work Kelly - and don't ever get forced into that box.

Kelly, I gave you a 7, which means that I really, really like it. I find it both creative and interesting. You got hurt, most likely, by the small shadow behind the head - the intersection between the hair and the background needs a little touch-up - it doesn't quite look natural. Still, I like this a lot! |

Hey, I did not vote in this challenge, and hard to say what score I would have given. I'd like to see the same shot with your eyes wide open staring right into the lens, might add to the emotion of the shot. I think the angle suits the image nicely. |

For a self portrait taken at arms length I feel you did well. I even like the tilt. I would have preferred to see your eyes open. |

I'm very impressed with the editing to do the makeup! Had you not said it was editing, I'd never have known. It has a peaceful feel to it to me. And I gotta say, shooting at 2 seconds, hand held, you did a GREAT job getting a crisp shot! |

I'm a bit afraid of what I see here. I don't want to comment any further. |

"Interesting" is a great word from Jayson. And I agree with him that I like it more the longer I look at it. There's not much more to say - you obviously wanted it to look like this. It's not like most DPC portraits, so it doesn't surprise me that it didn't score highly. But in true Team Suck fashion, you entered what YOU liked to see whether you'd connect. Well, 12 people voted 7 and up, and another 29 thought it was above average enough to vote it 6. I'd say that's a pretty good showing. :)
Edited to say that I LOVE your eyes here. Also, it'd be interesting to see a 9-panel composition, either in different colors like Andy Warhol or maybe 8 images pointing outward from the central shot, which could be a normally-colored, eyes open portrait. So this one would be top-right.

I didn't vote this particular Challenge, kistover and I generally like your work a lot. Being way to honest, if I had seen this one I'd have given it a 5 because of the eyes. Other than those, it would have gotten a 7 or so, as I really like the placement in the frame, and the overall calmness/serenity of the image.
So, bottom line; it ends up as personal preference, and has nothing to do with your art. |

It's an interesting portrait. The tilt is probably what hurt you the most during voting and the closed eyes. I personally like the closed eyes and the soft tones. I think the white background (with shadow) might be a bit too stark/harsh. However, it is an edgy photo, which I think gets better the longer you view it. The fact this is a self portrait is even more amazing. Still a better portrait than I can do. Personally I think this is mid-five material myself. |
