Greetings from the Critique Club

I love to see these cacti, especially when they are in bloom or have all that colorful fruit clinging to the edges of the paddles.

You did get some nice lights and darks in this image, and it comes close to making it as a pattern shot. However, I think digitalknight was on the mark with his comments which i won't belabor.

When I glanced at your portfolio, I noted you have some lovely pictures of the Arizona desert. I hope you continue to find and submit them to future Challenges.

Yellow is one of the hardest colours to get good detail in, especially in bright light. The composition works here however I think the light is too harsh to do the cactus flower justice.

this photo has no real subject - the only thing that draws my eye is the yellow blossom - and it seems fuzzy, and is such a small percentage of the image

The view point also seems rather ordinary - as though you walked up, pointed your camera down, and snapped the shot.

The final observation is there are no compositional hints as to where my eye should go - I find my eye just wandering around the frame.

I think your eye was drawn to the yellow blossom - I would suggest that you work to show us this common image in an uncommon way - wait for more indirect sunlight? Use a bounce card to fill in the harsh shadows? But definitely fill your frame with the blossom. Then I think you'll see your scores will be higher.

Hope that helps.
