Ahhh Martin, my friend - still trying to apply real-world rules to challenges I see, huh? :) Truth is, certain technical 'flaws' do not go over well on DP: blown highlights, soft focus, centred compositions - that kind of thing. You and I both know in the real world we can get away with these things, and as often as not they're desirable there too. But in challenges they'll hurt your score (particularly since a lot of voters are noobs to photography and are looking for things to criticize rather than critique).
The way I see it you've got two choices - conform and shoot technically 'perfect' shots and get higher scores, or keep shooting for yourself and accept lower scores. Either way is perfectly acceptable, though the former can be stifling, and the latter frustrating.
From *my* perspective of course I love the photo - it's crisp and has a wonderful character as the main subject. The nice shallow depth of field isolates her from her environment, and her veil actually acts as a nice little diffuser so she's well and evenly lit. Part of me would like to see more of the background though, so a light fill flash may have worked to bring some of that detail back. That said, it's your photo and you chose to make it this way, so I'll take it just how it is.
nice work scoring over a 6 while breaking the rules - well done bro. :)

Greetings from the Critique Club -
Let me say this first that I really liekd this image in challenge. Great detail, great colors and a wonderfully interesting model you have here. I thin my only suggestion would be to have a tighter crop on the top to really allow her to fill the frame a bit more. She looks great, let her fill the image.
Thats all I have for you. Glad ot see this score above a 6 but I would have liked to have seen it score higher. Good luck in future challenges!

Would have scored this a 9 if the background wasn't completely blown out. 7 |

This is a very interesting and sensitive portrait of Granny Bundi. The problem is that the overly bright and burned out background all around her is extrememly distracting. Also, since she is your main subject, she should occupy more of the frame than she does. Cropping down to just a little above the top of her head would help a lot, I think. |

What a dear woman. I love her glasses. Great focus and DOF. The background is a touch blown out, but it almost creates a halo for her, which she probably deserves. 7 |
