A tree with the setting sun behind it. I liked the way the light came through the leaves. I did not capture it quite as I had envisioned, will definitely try something similar another day. Should have opened up the aperture a bit to blur the background some more. Strongly backlit, so I blew out the sky to get detail in the tree and leaves. I feel that burnt highlights work better in B&W than they do in colour.

Post processing: Processed from RAW. Went for a high contrast style. Black & white conversion, channel mixer with 100& green and 50& blue. A levels adjustment layer to set the black point and the white point. Curves adjustment layer (overlay blending mode) to bring up the contrast. Added a layer mask to remove the effect of the curves layer from the tree trunk, and to tone down the effect on the leaves a little. Since I was already doing selective editing, I cloned out a few small marks on the tree trunk that were a bit distracting.

Great details on the tree. I think I would have liked a better DOF on the background as well. Nice conversion and tones.

This is a nice shot, but for me it lacks a subject... if, as you say, the background were less focused the tree would stand out more as a subject.

I would try a portrait crop, too, since your subject is more vertical than horizontal, or if not a crop to accentuate the "frame" created by the trunk and the branch.

I agree that black and white helps the blowouts.
they certainly look ok in this picture.
and i think it's a good thing to go back and try something again if it doesn't come out the way you want.
practice makes perfect :-)
