A painted street number located just upper an old door.
Shoot in the "City Isle" in Paris. It looked quite out of place in this busy city, bringing a kind of old peacefull feeling.
Converted to greyscale, as in my opinion this shot is about shapes, contrast and textures more than about colors.

Greetings from the Critique Club.

Composition: I feel the subject of the challenge is a little lost in this image. The number '8' is well placed...but blends into the background a little too much to really hold the viewers attention. The vanishing point is there once you relax and start to look around...but unfortunately for voting...it doesn't quite work. You have to understand the voter spends an average of 4 seconds on an image before moving on...you have to grab that voters attention during that timeframe.

Technical: Although the number '8' should be the focal point...it is a little soft...and gets softer as the viewers eye moves around the image. The tones are good...but a little on the dark side for such a lot of detail.

Overall: I think for such a dark scene...it would have been better to go with a simpler image...not so much detail. You want the image to tell the story...not confuse the voter. I hope this makes sense.

Should have placed higher. Got smashed by the DPC literalitsts.
A very nice, subtle take on the challenge. I was one of your three 9s.

not really working for me - i cannot really tell what this is a photo of. the foreground is too dark and the background it blurred so it is difficult. However, this falls into the parameters of this particular challenge.

I'll give you an 8 just because you have the number 8 on this gate looking like thing.

PRetty, and an interesting interpretation of the challenge. I'd have liked to see the camera rotated just a bit to the left for more context, and maby a hair for DOF, but very nice.
