just so it is known, it was my intention to blur out the foreground.
I could have easily just done one portion of the cactus as this was shot with the Sigma 105 macro. I went a different route(the wrong one).
As it turns out, I entered this without much thought, but had other shots taken that week which would have done much better...oh well. |

Greetings from the Critique club
Very good lighting, nicely done.
I think your main issue here is that there is just too many elements present.
The one spire that is in focus would have been a great shot by itself.
At the very most there should have been 2 or 3 elements. With the foreground spires being out of focus it really detracts from the entire image.
When shooting plants like this some times it is possible to gently and in this case, carefully!, move the foreground bits out of the way.
Many times I use a piece of twine or small stick to just tuck them out of site.
Otherwise I would suggest shooting the two in the front and having everything else be out of focus. That way there would be a clear sign what is the main focal point of your shot.
Hope this helps.

I don't know if there's any way to avoid it, but the out-of-focus spines at the front detract from what is otherwise a great picture. |

Interesting shapes and nice contrasting background. Depth of field is a bit narrow; it would be better if the main stems were better focused (although the out of focus foreground works great). And a closer shot would have been more appropriate for a Macro challenge. |

Good title and picture. My only thought was that the out of focus parts in the lower left and right distract from the clarity of the top ....maybe some cropping out of the lowe part of the picture could have helped improve it? |

Very good, good capture of detail and nice focus. I would have preferred to see slightly more depth of field so that both the main branch and the branch on the very left are in focus all the way up to the top where they meet. Good black background -- shame about the noise in it.
I recommend that you run the picture through Neatimage, and then mask the background and use Neatimage only on the background in this picture. This way you will retain full detail in the flower, but remove the noise from the background.
Good picture, nice execution good luck in the challenge. |

Almost like crossed fingers. I think I might have focused just on the two that are crossed. Neat shot. |

Good Idea and nice colors, but the two out of focus cacti kinda detract from the photo.

Nice subject. The front cacti are a little bit distracting, IMHO, and their role in the picture could be reduced by cropping about an inch and a half from the bottom so that your main elements would get more attention. |

Nice, but I would have prefereed a colored background. |
