its a shame the lighting on this isn't better. i'd love to see this shot taken early am or late pm, before/after sunrise/set, while still plenty of ambient light.

The lighting is only covering half it. The part in the light is to bright. Either bright or dark but not half and half. Try using a reflector or two to shine on the other part, if possible. Would also be cool if light was coming out from the inside as well, putting some color into it.

This would be much better if the top of the arch was not cropped off.

Here's an example of why shooting on an overcast day with even lighting is preferred. The split personality of shadow & sun really hurts this photo.

Light is very harsh - would be nice to have waited until the whole carving was evenly lit. Also I'd rather see the whole carving, rather than losing the top and sides.
