While I really like the concept, I think it would be stronger if the cube was against a bright red or orange sunset.

I know there's not much you could do about it, but for me the background detracts a lot from this photo.

interesting subject but with the distracting background and harsh lighting, it's an unremarkable shot. If you can't get a better background , and you have access to it, you might try and take a shot at night with (at minimum) two diffuse lighting sources. (One light possibly sharp) and keep light off the fence if possible.
