The John Hancock Tower in Chicago is considered to be one of the most recognizable architectural icons in the world. It is the 16th tallest building in the world rising to 344 m (1127 ft) on N. Michigan Ave, the magnificent mile of Chicago. Its distinctive X-bracing has made it an architectural icon, and eliminates the need for inner support beams to stiffen the building against wind forces, greatly increasing the usable floor area.

Its a mixed-used building with residences in the higher floors. Inhabitants have sometimes to call downstairs to ask what the weather is like because the higher floors are sometimes above the cloud level. There is a public observation deck on the 94th floor and a restaurant on the 95th with commanding views of Chicago and during a clear day, of Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan.
