There seems to be a great degree of fringing on this. Also, not sure how this met the science challenge in the true sense of the word. Without your title, this is a bird image. The exposure and contrast are also poor...hope that helps you understand why it got voted low

I think its a very good Photo and definately worthy of a Higher Mark as youhave suggested.
To Be honest, although I find nothing wrong with your Photo at all, the voters have probably thought - Oh not another Osprey Photo !
How ever, Dont let it bother you.
As long as you think under the Circumstances, you gt the Best Possible Picture you could, then be proud.

Cheers.

GREAT capture. Very high degree of difficulty!

It looks as though your 70-200 didn't have enough reach and you are cropping in closer. The colors seem to be washed out. Focus is off. Subject matter would be OK if you could've gotten closer and I would've also cropped the pole out.

I did not vote on this challenge, but I would probably have given this a 5. It meets the challenge, it is an interesting capture, but not overall impressive. Some things that hurt it are the lack of contrast, and the composition. The sky really put you at a disadvantage. Being hazy gives the picture an overall dullness which there is not much you could have done about. I think a much closer crop would help this though. If you had filled the bottom of the frame with the nest it would have made the viewer feel like he was much closer to the action. However, if you have already cropped off a lot, you may run into resolution problems. A 5 tells me that there is nothing really bad about the picture, but there are flaws that prevent it from being a great picture.

Compositionally boring. Cropping right below the nest would have added much more impact. Placing the mother and the baby on thirds intersections would have made it even stronger.

Lighting is somewhat flat, but playing with curves could have added some punch.

The pole is somewhat distracting, could have cropped some of it out. Both birds look somewhat out of focus. The white breast of the flying bird looks to be over exposed, you might have over corrected this if you post processed the picture.

I like the content of the picture. Moving closer might have helped but you probably were restricted as to how close you could get.

Definitely meets the challenge. The colors seem a bit faded out to me - I guess I would like to see a bluer sky.
