 Two red LEDs (powered up), on top of a laptop screen, with a flashlight on a piece of paper nearby to get some light on the metal parts.

Used a reversed Nikon 50mm F/2 for approx 1:1 macro.

This was a major pain, and a retake of one I almost submitted to a previous contest but pulled the plug because it wasn't sharp enough. Key to getting things to line up was a cardboard piece with a hole cut out so I could tape the LEDs down and hold them in place. Still not completely satisfied (especially with the red light in the LEDs, not a fully pleasing pattern) plus it turns out LEDs are pretty scratched up at a micro level. Even the littlest things (like lining up the background) seemed to take forever.

Processing required lots of levels, blurring the background a bit, stripping out some red to get rid of the interference in the LEDs, sharpening, selective colors, etc.

Interesting close up and nice background colors. Lighting on the LEDs (if that's what they are) is a little distracting, particularly the black bands around the outer edges. 7

I have no idea what those are. (I'm a computer geek and photography geek, not a science geek) But this has got to be the best image I've viewed so far. Your symmetry is perfect for this challenge. The blurred-out background complements your subject perfectly. Nice work.
