This was all lit with a small LED torch, which gave a beautiful focused spot light. The model is sitting on a grey/white benchtop. With the dark room, and focused spot, the background was easy to get totally black, so you can't see all the junk on my desk. :)
Anyway, I experimented with lots of different light patterns, and settled on this as my favourite. I like the fact that the woman is mostly shadowed, in favour of the child. However, for me, the photo is mostly about the woman, and the high contrast draw attention to the fact that she's in shadow, putting the child first.
The shot is lit from top, a little from the front for the kid, and for the drawn path on the table.
I took these shots at ISO100 to limit noise, but with a 30 sec exposure, the noise still came out strong, particularly as the original was very underexposed. I used Noise-Ninja, but it's still pretty bad. PP was curves, saturation, crop and sharpen.

| A beautiful image. There's quite a lot of dithering in the transition from blue to black but the concept and the execution of the light path are great. |
