Challenge: Where's Waldo? III (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM
Location: Snæfellsnes, Iceland
Date: Jun 24, 2007
Aperture: f22
ISO: 100
Shutter: 20sec
Galleries: Landscape, Seascapes
Date Uploaded: Jun 24, 2007

Taken with a self timer. Its my self on the picture so I had to do some serious running to get there in time, which I couldn't due to rough terrain so thats why I am transparent.

Editing:

1. Fade correction on the sky plus curves and saturation increase.
2. Clarify, saturation on the grass and rocks.
3. Color balance on the ocean.
4. Rezise and USM

Greetings from the Critique Club

Here's a creative take on the challenge: make "Waldo" a ghost! Seriously, the scenery is so breathtaking that I hardly notice the person; he's "hidden in plain sight".

What I really like about this photo is the illusion that the underside of the arch is the shore of a lake. The rocks are just the right shape and the sky below it just the right brightness that it looks like a reflection. And there is some artifacts or noise around the edges; just enough to make it look like ripples in the water. That's the clear focal point of the photo due to its brightness, contrast, and placement a third from the top. The eye is drawn there immediately when viewing the photo. It then moves down (away from the person!), and discovers the true nature of the scene. It works very well, and your high score is well deserved.

I hesitate to point out a technical issue because it's only really apparent when you look for it: the same artifacts or noise that works so well on the underside of the arch also appear above the arch, and give it an unwanted fuzzy appearance. I can't say where they came from, but similar artifacts appear in some of your other photos so you may want to track down their source so you can avoid them in future photos. Again, they are barely noticable so not a big deal; just something you may want to investigate.

Beatiful shot. An excellent location and I do like that you're a little transparent. For this challenge I wouldn't think it would work as well if you wheren't.

Beautiful capture. The perspective and maybe the shutter speed are messing with my eyes. It almost seems as if the man is looking into a pool of water. lol maybe it is? Great colors just kept me looking.

Stunning photo. I think I could look at it for a long time. Having someone in this photo really adds to the grandeur of the arch. It almost looks like a gateway to another world. I wish you had hidden Waldo a little better though for this challenge.

Yes of course its easy to spot Waldo, but IMO far better to have him here and looking so contemplative (and thus really enhancing the overall effect) than stuck away in a corner just to be a little better hidden. What a wonderful piece of natural archtiecture this is and the blue contrast between the water and the sky is fantastic.

Feel this might do very well and I think it deserves to

That is cool. At first glance, it is hard to tell if you are looking under an arch, or if it is a reflecting pool.

This is a very cool location. The sea looks weird as it changes to black. I am assuming the blue in the middle is the sea anyway. I would have liked to have seen some texture on it.
06/26/2007 01:50:30 PM
I liked this despite Waldo being so easy to find; it would almost be a better image without the person in it. But the blues in the pond are so wonderful, so deep and true, glowing, even, that I kept coming back to look at it again. Balanced against the pale colors in the sky, it has quite an effect. Well done.

Where is that place, it looks from another world. Thanks for sharing that. Waldo is not really hidden but what's the matter!!!

What an interesting location. I think a little less saturation in the green and less boosting of the shaddows would have helped because the exposure in the rocks doesn't seem to go with the eposure of the smooth sea. I think less processing would have made this more powerful

Woah - I thought it was a pool of water, but it's an arch? cool... Great shot; if the horizon appeared in the arch it would be more obvious.

appealing composition, beautiful colors, like the softness of the water against the harshness of the rocks. there is a great harmony between person and sky. - Will surely make the Top 5. - Good luck!
