I've been an astrological consultant for many, many years - I won't say how many because it would totally make me antique.

Astrology is a soft science, similar to psychology or meteorology. I use planetary positions at the time of birth or other events and conclude from the data what is likely to occur - or what has already occurred. I use it for individual consultations to help people make sense of events in their lives. But I also use astrology for research, and for forensic astrology - solving crime.

Obviously I use a computer program - several actually - to calculate charts, but I started out doing it by hand - in Germany.

So what you see here - after my very long intro - is a wheel via which you can roughly calculate the zodiac sign that is on the east horizon at any given time - in Germany. It's calibrated for those latitudes.

Someone gave it to me, and I forget who it was, but I've had it for many, many years... and now it hangs on my wall over the divination desk. Since I am not in Germany any longer (since 1990), I don't use it actively, but I love it and it holds a lot of history for me.

I set it to Leo Rising, because that's what I have in my chart.

What a great and interesting piece! You've photographed it well. The only thing missing is something to give its scale. How big is this thing?

What a great looking antique piece! I have to say that even this would not help me understand astrology. I guess I will stick with reading horoscopes lol. Never knew there was forensic astrology - bet you have some great stories from that!

This is a very interesting-looking arcane object, and it makes a great pic.

Are you going to do a free reading for everybody that makes a comment?? ;-) It looks like I'm a Widder.

OK, I have to be honest and say that I am a bit of a cynic regarding astrology but I LOVE this piece of equipment and you have shot it too perfection (even to the extent that the wood it sits on really complements it)

The writing on the write of the leo/lowe by the sign which looks like a calipgraphic M says jungfrau, which according to my rusty german means maiden? I am guessing that this is a translation of Virgo...Is that correct (I have just never heard it called this before)

Wonderful artifact. The brown wood behind it really makes it stand out even more.

Very interesting photo, especially with the story that goes along with it. A square crop works very well here.

I like old things. (This looks old). Didn't know there are differences between north, middle and south of Germany.

I love stories like this one. Very interesting! I, for one, don't follow these things, but find your abilities quite fascinating. I really like the history of the wheel, and the detail is beautiful.

Really interesting story, I'm glad you told it or I wouldn't know what that thing did! Nice colors, I like the textured background too, very nice :)
