It was difficult capturing this flower. Luckily the lady at the nursery allowed me to move it into filtered light.
Texture of this flower in real life is almost velvety.

Reds are difficult. You did a wonderful job getting the colors right.

Reds in bright light are very difficult to capture. I would suggest that you try my old standby favourite PP and use an adjustment levels layer, adjusting the input levels on the RGB settings but also adjusting the input and output levels on the Red settings. Another PP possibility is to add an adjustment layer for HSL and try different saturations using different blend modes such as overlay or soft light.

As far as capturing it in the first place, I like to take reds in the shade, maybe bring an umbrella and try a few shots that way?

I love the red, but I think that the problem is the bright lighting, which tends to wash out details as well as colors. On another thread, someone suggested setting the white balance in cloudy mode, even when the sun is shining.

Beautiful red color. I almost doesn't look real. They are interesting flowers. You did a nice job with it!

Didn't crop this image. I had a tough time shooting this but am trying to improve my "Red" photos. I'm going to try again on this flower next time I go the nursery. Maybe a different angle will give the flower some depth? Will try portrait instead of landscape on the next one as well. Focus is probably off (as Pixelpig mentioned) since I used the center of the flower to focus in on. I'm going to try focusing in on foliage first before I take the shot.
Thanks for the critique!

Would a polarizing filter or some sort of other filter that fits on the adapter ring help?

What I do is use the greens nearby to set my exposure. Red reflects about as much light as black, so if you use the red petals to get your exposure it will not be right. If you have a variety of greens nearby (sun/shade) do an exposure w/one of each. I think you made a smart choice to get in the shade, too. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip! Will try that next time I go to the nursery.

The flower looks like red ribbons tied together. That's a bright red. Nice.
