Western salsify (Tragopogon dubius) is a biennial, generally taking two years to complete its life cycle (from seed to seed). Its yellow flowers are produced in late spring/early summer.

The alternate common name, goat's beard, is a reference to the feathery bristles at the tip of the achenes.

The mature fruiting heads resemble very large dandelions, which can be preserved for short-term use in dried flower arrangements by spraying them with clear acrylic before carefully picking them.

It's good to see one of these from a little farther back. Thanks for the info on it!

Wow, this is just a great way to learn stuff, I never knew about the acrylic - thanks for the tip. Heck, I thought it was a dandelion.

Okay, i love this, the inclusion of the bud, bloom and spent bloom is very nice as are the colors.

I like seeing the whole thing, and you still have nice detail. I'm not sure I've ever seen the flower, or else didn't know what it was!

Nice red-brown color in the foreground.(I'm running out of original useful comments. I like the photo.)
It's nice to see 3 different stages of the life cycle in one shot. I would love to see the actual flower. I don't think it grabs my attention when in bloom, then when the seed pods show up I always wonder what it WAS.

I was also wondering what this often-seen macro looked like in real life. Thanks! I like this version very well.

Glad you posted this. I was wondering what the flower looked like from a non-macro perspective.

Beautiful closeup in environment, beautiful presentation. Spraying them with acrylic? What is acrylic?

They're such a cool looking thing. There are a few in my neighbors yard I think I'll go shoot.
