As far as I recall, "The Wizard of Oz" was the first movie I ever saw. South Africa didn't have TV yet then (we only got it some time in the mid-seventies) and I'm sure it would have been even more frightening on the big screen. I obviously must have found it really scary, because the next film I was taken to was "Hello Dolly" and I made my parents leave half way through because I was expecting something scary to happen.
Since TV, I think kids are much less sensitive. Some years later I remember my neighbour's kids, at the age of about 2, watching a really violent wildlife documentary, and it didn't seem to bother them at all. |

What a beautiful child (I love the wide-open pupils). The grain & b&W work really well. 1600 ISO? The room must have been dim, with most of the light coming from the TV.
The Wizard of Oz scared me at that age. I used to hide behind my dad's easy chair whenever the witch appeared. I also remember seeing it in color for the first time at a neighbor's, back before everyone had a color TV. Quite an experience. |

He looks like a little pirate with that bandana on. You can tell he's either very enveloped in the movie or trying to ignore you and your camera :) |

Great portrait, definitely looks like he was into the movie. The b&w works really well for this shot. |

Another great portrait. The grain gives it that "classic" movie look. |

Grain doesn't hurt it at all. This reminds me of watching it on TV many years ago. I have the laserdisc special edition that has tons of outtakes and alternate versions of songs. I really need to get that movie out and watch it. It came out in 1939, I believe, along with Gone With the Wind. Imagine how they must have looked on the big screen to a 1939 audience. |

Quite the intense interest. But... being from Kansas, I've seen that movie SO many times, I've never even imagined watching it with the girls. But I did read the book to Nicole as a baby. I hope Caleb liked the movie, as it is such a wonderful classic.
