**critique club**

Hi, Betty,

Congratulations on a well-done photograph. You've captured a scene very nicely, and you've shown the warmth excellently.

Photography is about telling a story, and, here, you've shown the story of one woman's live. Perhaps this led to a very detailed shot, but then maybe that was necessary. For me, there's a bit too much detail for this photo to be comfortable. Filling the frame with just the woman and the action would be just as effective, I feel.

I believe that you met the challenge well. I had a double-take with the title, though. In this internet age, I read 'Bush' as the USA president's name at first. The pun on tribal bush tribes came later. I'd have preferred just the last part 'tradition without technology', as that is sufficient to tell your story.

On a different topic, I really liked your 'Mountain Man'. All of the business of the Dutch woman is gone, yet the story is just as full.

If you have any comments on my critique, please feel free to contact me.

Best wishes,

Jim

A big thankyou for all the comments. Annie lives alone without running water and very few ammenities. Grinds coffee beans in the coffee grinder seen on the wall, melts snow for water in the winter and collects dew and rain water in barrels the rest of the year. The cabin is very small and she has fixed it up over the years. She is always happy to have visiters. She is originally from Holland.

I really think that this could be a image in NG: well chosen topic and shows real life. I would have preferred if it had a warmer colour cast. Right now the white are to bright, a little bit into yellow would give the image a more natural look.
Good luck.

Sorry - the only thing that seemed "without technology" was an abscence of tea-bag.

A nice "slice of life" picture. You can see so much of this woman's life in the details around her. Nice even lighting. I'd crop in more on the left, and I'd like to see a bit more of the foreground and the xmas tree (rt) - would pull the viewer into the picture from the front, focus the composition a bit more. 8

Good colors. You created a fairly good picture of rural life. For me, the picture is too busy and is out of season(Christmas cards and decorations). I can see a wall plug right behind your subject so the title doesn't fit the picture. I do see that she is living in a pretty rustic place and you did a great job with your lighting.

This is a splendid frontier type image. I hope you are related to this delightful person. It's a lovely picture portraying a gentle person. 8

Nice, appropriate folk subject. I especially like that you included the walls with the decoration - the walls add more to the tradition that you wanted to convey. The photograph overall is a little bit overexposed so maybe a little bit of saturation added in post processing wouldn't hurt.

Cute shot, you've captured her happiness (or so it seems). The bottom of the image is slightly blurry or out of focus to me, perhaps a DOF adjustment would've fixed it.

This is well titled, punchy colors. A bit too busy, perhaps from a different angle there would be less going on in general and only a few other elements that add to your title.
