Today we celebrated my grandmother's eightieth birthday. I could write a lot about this woman, but I'll try to restrain myself. She's an admirable woman with more pluck and a cheerier outlook on life than most people a quarter of her age. She raised seven intelligent, well-adjusted children on a skinny shoestring while helping her husband run a ranch, working full-time (just retired maybe three years ago when she got her hip replaced), volunteering, and creating a cult following for her trademark peanut brittle and candied walnuts. Everyone in town knows her, and she knows everyone. Happy Birthday, Grandma, and many happy returns of the day.

(This is a "hey, Grandma, look up here" candid, lit by bounced flash and diffused window light. Processing: Levels; crop; b/w via channel mixer, heavy on the blue and green; duotone; contrast & sharpen. )

Beautiful portrait. It seems like all the hard work has kept her young and healthy.

Thanks for sharing your Grandma's story with us!

She does not dye her hair at all. She has a few grays, but not many. (My mother, 55, has not a single gray hair that I've ever noticed -- I'm hoping I take after my maternal line in this regard as well! :)

Actually, she's probably right at his age. Her birthday's not till the 31st -- we celebrated it yesterday because we (my brother, parents and I) wouldn't be able to attend the big party that my mother's sisters planned for her elsewhere on the day itself.

Wow, excellent portrait especially because it is candid as well! You seem to have captured her spirit in this shot, thanks for sharing a bit about your grandmother!

Nice informal portrait. She has lived her years well, and it shows on her face.

She looks feisty! Great image and what a wonderful write up. I bet she'd be a bit embarrassed if she saw it, huh?

Wow good job for a candid portrait and I love the b&w conversion. Very strong tones and contrasts

Nice shot and nice that at eight your grandma still has a lovely glint in her eyes and smile

Happy birthday to her from across the Atlantic
