Living in limbo right now so this was edited on an uncalibrated monitor and I have nothing else to check it against so this could look really messed up. Hopefully going by the histogram helped. It looks blown on this monitor but the histogram says otherwise. So we'll see....

Taken outside under a covered patio using the sun reflecting off the concrete to the side/front of him.

He does seem very serious - and a touch sad, too! I am not keen on the striped background, finding it somewhat distracting, but you have captured a good portrait.

I think if he were looking at the camera it might look more portrait-like and not so much a candid, although my son always frowns for his portraits. rofl
