So some big problems... there was nothing to indicate that this was meant to be... a captured moment I guess we could call it. The sweat, dirt, sawdust, etc, are all way too subtle to know off hand what is going on. Something with him in action, like you said possibly with a tool would have done this shot wonders.
As it is now, there is no context and no way of knowing that this wasn't an image where you really went out and tried to get a proper portraite and just failed. (which is how it appears).
If you wanted to keep it close up perhaps he could be in action. Wiping sweat of his brow, taking a swig of refreshing water, etc.
The focus is really soft on the eyes and more in focus on his nose and his skin tone seems a bit off. I might have dulled down the green in the back a bit too. |

To me this just looks like any everyday picture and not really anything special (like a photo in a contest). I think the sunglasses are distracting, the exposure & contrast a little low and the color balance "slightly" off. Lastly, it looks like he has dandruff on his shoulders (whether it is or not) which could have been cloned out. |
