meh probably some lazy photoshop work on my behalf while lamely trying to add some light to his cheek so he didn't have a disembodied iris on that side of his head. I appreciate your comments and more importantly your use of the term 'chiaroscuro'.

p o w e r f u l. Amazing work. The shadows and tones are glorious. I love the way the face fades into darkness.

The Pedro Border..
That makes me giggle just a little. I think its amazing that J is going to have a photo diary of his life.. with quality photos. What a gift he is..and you are to him. Beautiful capture of a beautiful wee man.. you can see what he is growing into here. |

Nice portrait. I like the composition, color and well, everything - even his somber look. I hope you do well in the challenge. |

Love the high-contrast, and the sharpness of his eye. Composition is excellent too. Border is horrid - it looks really uneven. |

that's deep
you managed to wrap the dark and the bright side of this boy's character into a photograph.
very well done |

an exceptional portrait, technically it's excellent. The crop bothers me slightly though, it's a halfway house between a really close crop and a full head shot. I think maybe going slightly closer in would have more impact? I really like the compostion with the negative space though, it worls really well with the shot |

I like this very much - the intensity of stare is incredible, as though the boy is staring right into my soul! |

The light side/shadowed side is a great look for portraits, it really gives the effect of looking into the persons soul. The eyes are great here...they're not over the top like some of the entries. Well done! |

very good use of light, good tonal range, good composition, like the slight toning. the "Pedro" border is not my taste |

I like these sort of dramatic face shots and I do a number of them myself. Thing I don't care for here which I feel pulls the shot down is the composition. The lower right corner of the shot spoils the effect for me by introducing more shapes and tones to an otherwise stark capture. Maybe more top of the head, less below the chin. Just my opinion. |

I'm not sure I like the uneven border, but the picture itself is lovely. Especially the texture of his skin. |

Terrific. Wonderful use of light. Having that much black space is quite daring; I like it, not sure everyone will. |
