This is a macro shot of two Minnie Balls dug up on the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

I was a bit intimidated by the theme. I wanted to shoot something that was rich in color/texture and had archiological interest. I hope I suceeded. I know this competition will be a tough one.

The shot's been cropped and had the color, brightness, levels adjusted. I used an unsharp mask and noise reduction filters.

Thanks to all who took the time to comment. I learned loads from your remarks (scale, setting and background dirt - that lead oxide kept flaking off!) I'm working on composition and lighting and appreciate the positive reinforcement.

Nice detail and even lighting. Dark background really helps the eye concentrate on the bullets. Having two - set in this composition creats a good balance.

I'm really curious about how you found these, did you use a metal detector? The reason i'm asking is because my husband is into finding things in the ground with his metal detector, mostly coins and old things. He wants to take a trip to Gettysburgh someday. These old bullets are very interesting.

I like the flatness of lighting in this image as it really presents these objects (bullets?) as they would be shown in NG. Even with the flat lighting, your image shows well the texture and detail. Black background is lightly speckled on top. Meets the challenge theme very well.

just seems a little clinical, now if they were pictured on the grass/ground they would have had a sense of scale and "BEEN AT GETTYSBURG"

If I know my NG, this is definetly a shot you would see in there.

Great lighting, and very much the NG style.

interesting subjects quite earthy too. I think a rustic background would have done better.

Something to show the scale would habeen helpful - bullets or shells?

I like your picture a lot. Good choice of subject, I like the closeup. Negative point: the dust on the black backbround is a bit disturbing.

Very clean lighting. I see some noise or maybe dirt on the background along the top that you could have edited out. Still a very well done shot (No pun intended)
