Taken on July 4 (8:12pm...about 13 minutes before sunset) from Bald Head Island, NC. This is shot across the mouth of the Cape Fear River, over to the Oak Island Lighthouse on Caswell Beach. We were on the west beach, waiting for the fireworks to begin. This was the best sunset of the whole week we were there. I've never really been able to shoot good sunsets over water before, since we're on the east coast. But sitting on an island, off-shore in the ocean makes it easy! Shot it on a tripod with a 70-300 lens at 300mm. The orange cast is real. I just saturated it a little.
I thought about entering the shot when the ray came flying out of the water just as I hit the shutter, but it just wasn't as well composed. I still like, it's one of my most fortuitous shots ever.

This IS NOT my best photo of the month. That, I am saving for Best of 2007, because I'm not sure if I'll get anything better.
