Challenge: Free Study 2007-08 (Expert Editing)
Collection: Sports
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon
Location: NYC and Vermont
Date: Aug 22, 2007
Aperture: 4.0
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/125s
Galleries: Sky, Sports
Date Uploaded: Aug 29, 2007

This is two shots, both taken with the Sigma 10-20 at 10mm:
the stadium, which had a boring black sky, and the stars from the week before in Vermont.

Editing was:
- creating a careful mask to add the stars
- heavy noise reduction in the sky
- independent sharpening of the sky to bring out the stars and the stadium
- selective color adjustment layer to deepen the sky to pure black
- another, darker stadium layer to tone down the blooming around the lights
- painting out some construction beyond the outfield and then cloning in some lights to fill in the blank spaces
- cloning out a handrail near the bottom

Taken at the same game, from pretty much the same spot, as my Speed entry:

and these blur side challenge entries:

This is a fantastic night game shot, really effective and appropriate wide perspective, but IMO the inclusion of the starry night sky appears jarringly artificial.

Can I be the odd one out and say that I did NOT like the sparkling sky? That prompted me to give this a 6 instead of something higher. I think the stadium shot on its own looks fabulous and if you were going to add anything, I think like a sunset or gradient night sky would have been cool. Obviously I am alone in this thought since you scored so well. Congrats on a well received composition!

Oh JEFFREY!!!!!! THIS is AWESOME!!! It looks like Heaven to me. I love going to baseball games so much, and this so looks like the perfect evening. I can almost smell the popcorn and hotdogs and feel the utter contentment that washes over me when I'm at a baseball game!

FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great idea putting that sparkly sky with the sparkly stadium. You are definitely the master of night photography! Beautiful detail and colors in the stadium. This can't be the same game where you captured that throw to first base. Or maybe you were moving around in the stands for the different shots.

Excellent work, Jeffrey, and pleased to see it was well-received. You've REALLY taken your game up a notch of late. Keep it up!

Man, it's been so long since I've been to Shea. I wouldn't have recognized it had you not listed NYC in the location. Congrats on the good score. You know you could have called this "All Stars".

Very strong photo. Montage? I think if the stars were a touch less bright, it would be a little more believable. Great shot overall!

This is pretty cool, starry sky looks a bit unreal though, for obvious reasons, maybe some buildings along that skyline would have made it a bit more realistic, I dunno... Gave a 6.

Nice shot - Like the tones - The sky looks a little too much like Starwars which is a little distracting.

Haha....whenever I go to Shea stadium, I never see stars like that here in NY! Never mind in queens! Good photo, i'll love to purchase this someday since the stadium is being razed soon. Instant fav...9

Excellent. You captured the scene beautifully. Looks almost like it might if we were actually there. The sky makes all the difference, I think.

great shot! great viewpoint! sometimes the cheaper seats are the BEST! Only complaint is the amount of stars or white specks.
