We regularly get together for dim sum at the House of Hong. This window backlit my friends on an overcast very grey Seattle day at about 11:30am

Getting a good silhouette is not as easy as it looks. It's good to keep the subject down to a minimum of lines or a simple outline that looks like a black cut-out laid on a brighter background. I got hammered on my first challenge entry as well, so don't let it get to you.
I think that you can adjust the Rebel settings to increase contrast if you go thru the manual and look for it.

Not quite silhouettes, I'd like to see more of the Dim Sum (as your title implies), and the white balance seems a bit cold.

Sorry, this just looks like a snapshot to me. The blown out highlights in the window are drawing my eye away from the subject.
