Eh, don´t really think this is all that good of a photo but I haven´t played on DPC since late July (not counting the free studies wich were not taken specifically for DPC) so I decided to submit this one although I don´t think it´ll do too well in this challenge. Hopefully I´ll score points for being a bit unique though but if I came across this and had to vote I´d hardly give it more than a 5.
Went on a Aurora Borealis safari with a bunch of other photographers, including indridistefans and some other DPC members. We didn´t have much luck with the borealis that night, didn´t find any till just before heading home and even when they finally appeared they were very very weak. The spot we were in didn´t have any interesting surroundings so I just decided to stay behind the rest of the people and take some silhouette shot´s, just for fun, wasn´t aware of this challenge at the time. Took a couple of others at 16mm but they didn´t turn out as nice as the weak borealis meant I had to expose more than a minute wich was way too long for anybody to stand still. I will probably get comments that I didn´t get down far enough and I agree, I would have wanted to see the legs of some of the people in there as well but since they were standing in front of a low wall that was no option at all and I went down as low as the tripod would allow me. Anyway, like I said, I think the bottom part is too dark but really nothing I could have done about it except ask everyone to move and I wasn´t about to do that.
Processing was very minimal, raw conversrion, some cropping, shadow/highlights, levels and curves to darken and fix contrast and sharpening after resizing. |

wow, this is such an interesting shot. I love the capture of stars in the sky, but the people, toward the outer edges (especially the left side) aren't very distinguishable. I still love the photo...score 8! |

nice! So often we see silhouettes of trees or houses against the northern lights, but to see observers, and the camera on the right...nice one. |
