Thank you all for your kind comments and wishes. It is an illusion, I was not happy with the final product but I am relieved that most thought it worked convincingly.

The bullet is a pen cap suspended by thin fish line; the pulverized apple is flour that was loaded inside T-shaped tubing hidden inside the apple. I blew into the tubing and pressed my wireless shutter release simultaneously many times (each time reloading flour into the rig) and this is the best I could come up with. My intention was to have the powder trail the bullet, as it would happen in reality, it just never came out that way and I gave up after many attempts. In a real shot, it would be physically impossible for the powder to be ahead of the bullet, oh well.

The setup was lit with one monolight to each side (using soft boxes) and a low power snoot to the bullet.

Thank you all again!!!!!

I'm so surprised that this one didn't ribbon! It's such an AMAZING photo!! But 7th place! A quite honorable place to finish up :)

Congrats on your top ten! This looks like a very well done illusion. Am I wrong?

woah ok second bullet shot. did you actually shot an apple? this had to have taken AGES to do...WONDERFULLY composed and true luck that the bullet is right in the perfect shot to really add to the composition. great job!

Not easy to spot... a trajectory trail would of help the effect

The direction of motion was not obvious. I had to look some to see where the bullet came from.

Good setup (I don't believe it is real, although it looks believable). If it is real, my apologies, and you must have a great trigger system.

Did you really shoot the apple? That is so freakin' cool!

Oh this would have been sooooo good if it were closer to the action. The grapes and flower seem unnecessary and out of place. I would have loved to see a more concentrated focus on just the bowl of apples.

Wow, this is amazing!!!

Cool shot. Took me a second to see the bullet. I'm curious to know how you setup the spray shooting out of the apple.

Ohmy! You have to study this a minute to fully appreciate it. At first I thought it was just dust floating around the one vase, which was cool and high scoring on its own -- but then I noticed the bullet and the holes in the apple. Wow! And you didn't compromise any technicals in pulling this shot off. It's perfect. . .and the degree of difficulty has to be a 10. . .so 10 it is for a perfect score.

Very impressive! I've seen this kind of thing done before, but I'm sure if I attempted it I'd wind up with a dead cat or dead neighbor or something. I gave it a 10 just because it can't be an easy thing to pull off.

Ach,how did you do this! I can't belive you really shot to the apple :)

odd how the entry and exit of the bullet created an outward splitting of the apple - you might want to rework this.

wow...murder on the still life floor! good timing, though I bet you killed a lot of apples to get this image
