Challenge: Group Portrait (Advanced Editing V*)
Camera: Nikon D50
Lens: Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
Location: Arethusa Falls, NH, USA
Date: Sep 29, 2007
Aperture: 7
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/60
Galleries: Portraiture, Water
Date Uploaded: Sep 30, 2007

Taken at Arethusa falls in the New Hampshire white mountains off rt 302. I think we underestimated the failry uphill hike, but were rewarded by the beautiful sight at the top. Water was low due to the fairly dry conditions recently in the northeast.

Edit** I found it interesting that many people thought the shot was somehow unreal or taken on a set. I think its probably the 2 different light temps in the photo as one comment mentioned. This shot was acheived by underexposing and using one sb-600 strobe off to the left.

Thanks for all the great comments and my PB!! Probably the lowest scoring top 20 in awhile.

Hey there from the Critique Club

First of all, congrats on a new personal, as well as a top 20 finish.

Camera Work/Technical: Terrific. Your technical wok is one of the main strengths of the image. Your focus is crisp, and your f/7 aperture kept the entire scene nicely focused.

Lighting: I really like these types of shots, using flash to light your subject while relying on ambient light to light the scene. I think that you had points deducted for the harsh shadows that were created on the right side of your group. Adding a second flash would have remedied this easily. I do like that the background is a bit less exposed than your subjects.

Composition/Content: Great content for the challenge, and you put together a nicely composed image. Your placement of the group works nicely to draw the eye into the frame and right up the waterfall.

My Opinion: This image is appropriately scored. While I like the lighting, I think that bringing up the exposure on the background would have worked to balance the image more, thus taking away the urge to think that this one was shot in studio, and may have even brought another tenth or two. Nice work.

Thank you for the opportunity to provide a critique on your entry,
Eric

it looks like it was taken in a studio... But if it was, then why are the shadows so harsh. And why does it look like there are mixed light (sources of different temperatures). If you put a campfire in the bottom left it could help make the warm light from the left make sense.

I don't know if its the lighting or not but this almost looks like it was taken on a set???

Good portrait. An odd feeling of night and day at the same time - inside and outside. soft and hard light.

Nice background and good composition of the group. They could use some fill flash, but overall a pretty good group portrait.

Mostly nice lighting and a genuine group portrait. Composition of the group is apparently given some thought here, and surrounding elements are functional to the picture. Not a stunning or exciting picture, but a good group portrait (8)

It almost looks like a studio shot. Nice directional lighting though a bit dark on the right.

The lighting on the first woman's face is a little harsh, but otherwise this is a nice one.
