Challenge: The Four Elements (Advanced Editing I)
Camera: Olympus C-750UZ
Location: Allt Mullach, Strathspey, Scotland.
Date: Feb 14, 2004
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/5 second

A simple flame on a rock in a river. I placed some small pieces of firelighter on the rock and set fire to them (liquid fuel in a small depression was an alternative but I didn't want to risk polluting the river). Took about 15 shots at various exposures.

Image is virtually straight out of the camera. It was very slightly cropped along the top and very minor cloning was done at the base of the flame to remove small bits of visible fuel. That was all the post photo editing that was done. No enhancement was carried out to colours or lighting as I think they speak for themselves.

Tighter crops were tried and initially submitted but in the end felt that image was more effective by retaining more of the bank vegetation and rocks (more of 'earth').

Why did you do that? The fire doesn't do anything for the over all image it actually looks fake? I guess you drank to much of that lighter fluid yourself oh well.

THis is really good except for the lack of defiition of the flame or fire. Just doesn't look right....otherwise great shot.

Loved it without the light.

A lovely scene although, despite adding an extra element with fire, I feel that this is a bit trite and unnecessary, making me conscious that this is a challenge photo rather than simply beauty in its own right. Goo details and nice water flow.

I would have cropped out the roots at the top left of the frame.

Perfect exposure on your stream. The flame is in such an inappripriate area that it spoils an otherwise great shot for me. 6

I think this image holds it's own without the flame. Infact, i think this image is better without the flame.

Is this in Scotland? Looks very much like my area of Oregon, wet, moss, green. Creative shot. Well done, congrats.

I actually like the water better without the fire....

I love this shot, but am not sure about the fire part of it and why it is there. but i love the water movement. I have been trying to get a shot like this and it always seems to be too much light from where I was shooting to get the slow shutter speed

I love the moss on the stones, that is lovely. And the rushing water looks awesome.

The flame is odd in the beautiful scene and distracts my eye from moving into the upper part of the frame.

Really nice...
Dont know about the flame, though... Makes it to complicated - long shuttertime works well with water, but not with fire... Take away the fire and you got a 10. Now you get a 8.

the flame makes no sence outside of the challenge, and ruins an otherwise great shot.
