This is a kind of follow-up on my battle of the elements photo I took a year ago for the Landscapes challenge at that time.

These windmills are not used for grinding stuff. No they keep our Dutch earth dry by using the force of the wind to pump up the water. They pump it from the lower lands (polders) into a ringcanal (ringvaart). Another mill dumps the ring canal water into the sea or a lake. The water you see in the front leads to that canal. This type of windmills can be found near the old dikes.They are scarce, but some still do their job. Electric mills are the business nowadays.

There are two flaws in this image in my opinion:
1)Time of the day: Between 11.00-13.00. BAAAAAAAaaaddddd, but that was the timeframe in which I had time to do something. :(
Result: 2 to 3 stops of dynamic range in flat lighting, instead of 5+ stops.
2) Lack of motion blur. The front mill is in operation, but the freezing of the wings does not tell that. Problem: avoiding camera shake with high shutter speed

Camera lens position was app 70mm in 35mm lingo.

Photoshop work:
* Cropped
* Chroma noise reduction
* levels
* Brightened foreground with a 40% screen layer on the dark parts
* took out the headlights of a car
* Digital Velvia setting 1
* Sharpened
* Save for the web

As we don't have these in the United States, windmills hold a particular interest for me. This is probably my favorite of your group of them. The misty landscape with the red of the mill against the deep green grass is stunning and evokes a sense of wanderlust. The sheep really cap it off for me!! SUch a lovely capture.

This is a beautiful landscape that conjures up memories of an earlier era. I really like the fog obscuring the other windmills and the sheep. The colors are really outstanding.

And you folks get a lot of both wind and water... Lovely soft photograph with the bit of red adding the needed emphasis.

Great shot. I spent a year in Holland in 1964. Still love the windmills. I like that you caught the sails unfurled and working. 8

Moody shot with a touch of water (no sense of actual wind but no points deducted), color pallet is pleasing and calm. On of my picks for a ribbon
