This is one of several black pottery pieces that my archaeologist son brought back with him while in northern Mexico several years ago. He purchased this piece from the natives around Sonora.

The photograph was made looking straight down into the mouth of the pottery through the 50mm/1.8 lens of my Canon 10D, mounted horizontally on my 3021BPRO Bogen/Manfrotto tripod. For lighting I used Alien Bees monolights at 45 degrees to either side of the subject.

Post-processing included Photoshop auto levels, cropping, usm, and brightness/contrast tweeking. I also replaced the white background with black, before applying Neat Image to remove some noise.

A pretty pot, and nicely captured.

Not sure I like the straight down angle

Wonderful simplicity and complexity. It would be hard to say what this was without the title. Good choice to show the light source within the composition. Everything is perfect, imo. It was a pleasure to look at this.

Beautiful! Love the off center, off setting reflections!

The design and composition on this are well done. the blacks look silvery in places, and they could be blacker.

Why did you choose top view? Would be more interesting to see it from different angle. 7

*Almost* perfectly symmetrical... so close... :)

Nicely done. You'll probably be chastised for doing a "black and white" but it is authentic pottery and well photographed. 9

I'm not sure what to think about this. Maybe a white background to make the black stand out better? Maybe not.
