Challenge: Photojournalism III (Minimal Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Tokina AF 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 AT-X 107 DX Fisheye for Canon
Location: Downtown Portland Oregon City Hall
Date: Oct 23, 2007
Aperture: f/3.5
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/30 sec
Galleries: Architecture, Photojournalism
Date Uploaded: Oct 23, 2007

Took several shots in dowtown Portland for a photo assignment in one of my classes and looking thru them I just really liked this shot so I looked to see if there was a challenge that it would fit into. There is always corruption somewhere in government so I figured this would work well for the photojournalism challenge. Besides the fact that it is minimal editing. I'd like to have been able to do a little in levels and straigten it a bit but all that was done was resize to 640 then sharpen at 3.7 pixels at 20 percent. I will probably end up with comments that I sharpened too much but I think it really helped the shot.

Disqualification: I received a validation request after the challenge was over and was disqualified because of sharpening. The sharpening tool I used only said "sharpen" it didn't say "smartsharpen". I replied to the disqualification message with the following email....

I went by this rule in the minimal editing rules...

"sharpen your entry using your editing software’s “sharpen” or equivalent option. The use of customizable sharpening tools, such as Unsharp Mask, is not allowed."

In Elements 5.0 I clicked the button that said "sharpen" and it gave me a window to do that. I specifically made sure to NOT select unsharp mask because I read that rule. I don't know what other sharpen there is except the sharpen brush which I knew wouldn't be okay because it is editing a part of the photo and not doing the same thing to the whole photo.

Since this ruleset is still listed as (trial) then this specific rule should be edited to say you may not sharpen your image using ANY tool. Or be more specific as to what sharpening IS allowed. I would have submitted it without using any sharpening. I only sharpened it because that was the only thing I saw in the rules that I was allowed to do. When I read the rules I went to the "you may..." part of the ruleset to see what I could do to it before doing any editing.

nice shot. Good fisheye effect. With a bit more freedom to edit you could make this photo even better. perhaps sharpness and some more saturation would do the trick.

I like your image, yet when I try to imagine this in a newspaper - using your title - it doesn't seem to quite fit together. Perhaps if there were two business people/politicians it would be more effective.

...and page three, page four, page five..... Have you noticed that the amount of corruption in big and small town politics has really gone up. This is very relevent and compele us to read on. Great shot with the fish eye, the colours and tones are great, good work.

I am convinced that this is city hall.

I am not convinced of corruption.

One of the more interesting images in this challenge. I love the use of fisheye lense, and the title. I think it is technically very good. Good lighting, interesting subject.

You need some suits in the photo. Might get sued but thats journalism. The photo does convey a certain distorted authority

Really cool shot. But it doesn't tell me any story at all about corruption, which is what your title says it is. The distortion is cool, but it's people who are corrupt, not the building. (And the one burnt out bulb is way too subtle.) This would be great for a feature on restoration or the architecture of City Hall

I really like this...looks like you used a fisheye lens. I have one on order and can't wait to start using it. Very nicely done 9

Great image, perhaps would more suit a feature in a journal rather than a front page but undoubtedly an image which I wish I could have taken. Great shot

I Like this shot, it does help you that I am a fan of wide angle lenses. ;)
Nicely done with the symetry. 9

love the distorted perspective to provide a great metaphor for the 'story'

Cool Shot, Very symmetric. Nice fisheye?

nice fisheye lens capture
a bit too much lens distortion for a photo without a story or additional subjects that could counterbalance the excesive atracton of the distorted lines. Unless you choose a title that plays with the distortion, for example "Corruption Inflates The City Hall"

cool shot, but needs something to tell its story; as is, it's more art than pj.

colours look washed out to me and the fish eye distortion prob wouldn't go to well on the cover. The connection to the challenge is in your title not the photo. However as a photo I quite like it and under basic editing it would look great
