 I went out shooting with bradshaw after school. I was mainly concentrating on shooting candids, but also had the challenges in mind. So when I noticed this aged man, I though it would be perfect. He was standing outside of a meat shop, smoking and reading a book.

Post Processing:
Black & White conversion, Curves to increase contrast, Curves to lighten up, Neat Image, resize, USM, border.

there are some good things about this photo, the exposure and focus are very good, the background has some interesting lines without distracting from the subject, but still it doesn't transcend "centrally placed candid". In other words, I'm not sure why I'm looking at this man other than that it fulfills a challenge.

I like the b&w to set the mood. This would be much better with a really old guy, some wrinkles showing, but I still think you have done well with this shot.
