 me taking a cold shower under a garden hose at night :>). Nights are getting a bit chilly here, so it was not an overly pleasant shower, but other than that I had a lot of fun making this shot. Living in San Diego helped, I am not sure I would've done it at higher latitudes at this time of the year :).

I needed two assistants for this shot: one (it had to be my wife Irina - how could I deprive her of such rare sadistic pleasure?) to hose me down from the 2nd floor balcony , another to press the shutter while I was getting soaked. Used two 500W work lights directed towards me from slightly behind the hose head "through" the water, so the light is nicely diffused by water droplets, and one more work light at some distance to the left from me, to highlight my back a little bit (strobes wouldn't do since they'd freeze the water droplets) - still barely enough light for this shot. The problem is that I could not use a long exposure because I wanted short water streaks rather than a continuous veil-like flow. That's why I had to use rather short 1/90s, open up the aperture to f/2 and bump ISO up to 800. Took a while to prepare and test everything without actually getting wet, but after all was tuned, I managed to get the shot I wanted in one take! (i'm sure you understand why I wanted to minimize the number of takes :)


P.S.
Hey, thanks for the comments, favs, and of course the great score! I guess putting an effort in setting up a shot does pay off, doesn't it? It was probably the most elaborate (and cold :) setup of all my 120+ DPC entries.

I still like the photo in the original movie poster a lot more than mine (for the wind blowing off the water and his shirt, and a more tense and dynamic pose), but then again, if I had Hollywood resources, if I was Tim Robbins, or (perhaps most importantly) paid like him to do it :)...

Anyhow, in the last Scene It! challenge I was oh so close to ribboning, so this time I really wanted to nail it. Glad it worked!

one of my all time favourite movies and such a wonderful image to represent it ..
so good to see this with a blue ribbon .. CONGRATULATIONS on such an amazing photograph ..

Funny thing...
I didn't enter but the one idea I had for a shot was this one.
I would have gotten my ass kicked trying to stage this on 9th Avenue, for sure.

okay, the fantastic movie played out with this fantastic photo is what i've been striving for :-) ... yada yada yada ... great work, so simple and effective ... really great. and that movie is one of the top 5 imho (at leat for me)

Really glad to see this ribbon and score where it did. When I think of the last Scene It challenge I think of your Chaplin entry and now when I think of this one its this image. Holy cow! You nailed the pose, the set-up and the lighting! Love how you captured the golden light that illuminates the rain and the your model for this shot. Great pose! Technically and compositionally this is just fabulous! I really don't have any critiques for this one. Great job!

Fear can hold you a prisoner but hope can set you free. I think this even looks like Tim Robbins in profile. This is magazine worthy. The coloring and editing are stunning. My only 10 in the challenge. 10! Good Luck on the Blue.

Ok I can't understand why I only gave you a nine the first time, bumping to 10 and if there was anything higher you would get it. Fantastic shot not to mention this is one of my all time favorite movies and this one of the best scene's in it. Wonderfully emotional shot. This image just makes me want to go on forever about how much I love it.

I just rated all the photos and I must say that this is the best by far of all of them. I've seen this movie and I love it. So I would have been more critical on this shot than any since I know the movie well. I hope it wins. I gave this one a 10. Well deserved.
