My older brother (by 1 year) was born profoundly mentally retarded. He grew to the mental age of about 2-3. As was the way at that time, he live in the "Training Center" for the Mentally Retarded. We would often go see him on Sundays, since the Center was nearly 40 miles away (no freeways then.)
I had an errand that took me near the "Center", so I decided to go and see if any of the wonderful playground remained. I really didn't. But this amphitheatre, built in the '30s still remains and is used. As kids, we'd play here often, running along the stone shelves and enjoying the rhythmic patterns.
Seeing this area, in the shortening light, sent me back in time nearly 40 years. Perhaps it is just the memories talking, but this shot nearly took my breath away. It will serve as a tie to my roots for a long time.
My brother died at 19 (1973) while living at the "Center". For our family, it was a joyous occasion, as we knew his mind and body were free to be the bright, young man that was hidden inside. |

I am always amazed at how much these "special kids" can bring in the life of the ppl around them. I can sense you loved your brother very much and your photograph really conveys everything those moments shared with him meant to you. Thanks for sharing! |

What an awesome story. The shot is good, but knowing the story behind it really adds to it. |

There's so much to like about this photo - the lines and curves, shadows and light, color, the way the eye is led into the darkness, the play of the light and shadow vs the light and dark of the stone. Very well done. |

This is a beautiful image, & even more so after reading your story. The shadows toward the back make this very dramatic, the tones are really nice too. |

Interesting shot. The colors in the rocks are beautiful. The circular amphhitheater makes for a great shot! Where is it? You captured it nicely! |
