No, this is not because Christmas costs a lot of money. It is a lot better than this. Read on...

For the past 2 years, my family and I have been sponsoring a family in need of the most basic things. Everything is done anonimously but the funny thing is to try to be creative in what we can give them. Sure they need food, but they also need to have a good time and feel like their dreams can come true. Out of the 16 families that were sponsored last year (by 16 donating families of course), only one is still in need. The others got their hopes high enough, it carried them well beyond the Christmas period. For them, Christmas lasted more than a few days... In fact, it's still going on for most of them.

So, each year, we take the money we would normally spend on each other's gifts (my mom, my dad, my sister, my husband, my mother-in-law, my godmother, plus a few friends) - that amounts to a nice sum! - and give it to a family. This is a part of the money collected.

Doing this is the best decision we've ever taken. It has brought back the true spirit of Christmas in my family.

That's great, such a nice story & good deed. It's very generous of you to donate your gift money to a needy family, I could imagine like you said it would definitely bring back the true meaning of Christmas.

caroline, that is the most excellent story you've written about you and your family .. its the true spirit of christmas which i feel a lot of people have totally forgotten in the mad and crazy society we live in .. so aquisitive and so wanting more than we ever really need .. also we can tend to forget about the people who are struggling .. i know i do . thank you for the reminder .. :)

A very wonderful thing to do. I'm sure it makes an enormous difference in that family's life and does restore some hope for them.

Fun photo, too - great way to illustrate your story.
