Does a tree make a sound if it falls in the forest and there's no-one to hear it?

The first thing that came to mind when I read the challenge.
Setting up over 50 pencils took a long time and getting the lighting right was a nightmare. I wanted to get plenty of shadows like in a forest without ruining the contrast - it took ages.

I don't expect to do well in this challenge because this one might be a bit too abstract. However, it's exactly the image I thought of when I read the challenge, and as far as I'm concerned I really enjoyed setting it up and love the result.

I'll try not to let the negative comments get to me so much this time!

Thanks for all the comments guys. I was very pleasantly surprised to see people getting enthusiastic about this one. It's one of my favourites. My fears about it being too abstract were unfounded - apologies.

I love this concept. Good job. I was wondering what it may have looked like if the pencil lying on the ground would have been poistioned so that the sharpened edge was not visible. ?? 8

This had to take some time to set up. Nice lighting and a very creative approach to the challenge.

I knew somebody would try this idea, and you executed it very well. I know this must have been frusterating to set up. The only thing I would change is crop out the top of the pencil on the left.

According to the theory, the presence of an observer changes the outcome, just like Schrodinger's Cat. Interesting take on the Challenge, nice BW composition, I can tell you really put effort into the image.

The angle of view gives a really teetering kind of feel to this - almost makes me feel like I do when I am standing at the top of a high staircase. Vertigo! I like the light and shadow and blue tones. This is a great abstract interpretation of the challenge. 9

Very clean and modern; well done. Something seems to be missing in the lower portion, though.

I dread to think how difficult this must have been to set up, but it was worth it! Wonderful lighting and shadows, oh yes and a good title.

wow! you have FAR too much spare time! What a brilliant image - can't help but think that this would make a fantastic record sleeve (actually, it's slightly reminiscent of Origin of Symmetry by Brit band Muse). Love it. 10.

A different idea and a great shot. Pencils got a little clumped/overlapped on left which made for a darker, more prominent area of the photo (not sure if that was intended, but it's competing for my attention with the fallen pencil). Other than that, very cool! :)

Very stylish and masterfully controlled, to so perfectly maintain the perpendicular. I like the 'not writing' silence, too. One tiny gripe is the sharpened point in the upper left.

Shadows up front nearer to the sharpened end of the pencil are a little distracting to me. Cool idea!

Very cool concept and a good angle!

My only minor gripe is the pencil in the top left corner of the picture, it would have looked better if it would have been whole.

Absolutely Stunning!

The reflections off the pencil surface, the beautiful attenuation on the shadows, just wonderful.

I was thinking along these lines at one point during the comp and Im glad to see this concept realised so beautifully :)

Great work!

Clever, love that the pencil barely casts a shadow so it doesn't break up the continuation of the others.
