Effect was gained with an excess application of the clarify adjustment in Paintshop Pro. This is a brightness/contrast adustment that enhances highlights in a image.

Decription of this from the PSP help file:

To enhance depth and clarity
1. Choose Adjust Brightness and Contrast Clarify.
The Clarify dialog box appears.
2. Type or set a value in the Strength of effect control.
Use the smallest value that produces a satisfying result. Values that are too high cause unwanted artifacts to appear in the photo.
3. Click OK.

I've found excessive application of this adjustment can yield a false HDR or art-like effect on some images. With others, it just makes them look weird.

It depends on the subject as to how well it works. Notice it had a great effect on the car, but the headlight and the bit of house in the background are not affected much.

Here's the original out of the camera shot:

Unfortunately, the help file does not give a detailed description of exactly what clarify does, except that it works with brightness and contrast. I'll see if I can dig up more info, because I would really like to know precisely what it does (I like to know the nuts and bolts stuff) and you are not the first person to want to duplicate it in photoshop.

Wow - huge effect on the car! Very nicely processed to get to the final version. I may play with it in Photoshop to see if I can find somewhat equivalent processing. Thanks for posting the info and the original! P.S. I tried, and I can't even come remotely close.

This is a great view of the old beauty. Mind posting your processing steps and possibly the original?

I really like the gritty earthy feel and the perspective has kind of a duality between perception and visual. Very nice image!
