Challenge: Silence IV (Basic Editing I)
Collection: What Was I Thinking?
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Location: Easton, CT
Date: Mar 1, 2004
Aperture: f6.3
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/15
Date Uploaded: Mar 2, 2004

It was too hard to really stop the action on the pin, so I held it in place with a [just visible] dab of rubber cement. I stumbled on the light effect by accident when I tried to focus a 500w work light into a narrow beam between two boxes. The tip of the pin is slightly out of focus to suggest movement. Very little adjustment- (crop, a little USM, white balance and levels).

Thanks for the comments everybody. I was very amused by the range of opinions- some liked the motion on the pin, while others suggested a faster shutter speed to stop it. In reality, the pin was stationary. To those who thought this wasn't silent because you could hear the pin, I ask you... could you hear the pin if it wasn't silent? ;-)

The focus is off on the pin. I couldn't identify the subject until I read the title, this is a problem.

Like your floor. A slightly faster shutter speed would have gotten the blur out of this shot and made it strong because the crop is spot on.

Depth of Field is off... pin needs to be sharper. Good idea and attempt, though... 5

Nice idea, but the focus appears to be directed more to the lower left corner of the image.

Would love to have seen a closeup photo of this pin dropping/splashing in a spoon full of tomato soup just as it's about to be eaten by a handlebar moustached restaurant patron! Nice lighting streaming across photo. Shiny metal objects (pins) only pic up lighting/color from their surroundings, large white reflector would have helped bring out silver color of pin. Pin is black otherwise. Blur at tip shows good action, good choice of shutter speed.

I thought about this one, but didn't think I could pull it off the way I wanted. This one isn't too bad, but I think it would benefit from having the pin somehow stand out more. Maybe a different background, or closer crop of the pin.

but then it is not silent anymore..... I get the expression and love the creativity.... I debated this issue with myself while trying to come up with a topic and thought it might not really be silence.... YOU did a great job.

Meets the challenge I suppose but if I just saw the image I am not sure what it would say to me

I'm sorry but a pin dropped on wood although it may be quiet, it is not silent,

perhaps closer in would add to the interest here - as is creative execution of the cliche

Very clever interpretation of the theme, and a good photo. If the wood were a bit sharper it would emphasize the motion of the dropping pin a bit more.
