This is our Sacred Heart Church. It's not the best shot because there's always cars parked out front and I tried to crop them out.
Our town has a large population of Mexican Americans and way back in the day when Mexico was at war with Spain a lot of Mexicans fled for safety and settled in Ft. Madison and got jobs working for the railroad. This was their choice of church. Back then the Mexicans had to sit in the back of the church and if they wanted to get married they had to do it in the basement of the Catholic school.
The inside of this church used to be really beautiful, then they remodeled it and it looks kind of tacky. Lots of gold paint and angels on the ceiling.
This was also a very popular church for weddings up until about 10 years ago because it was the only one in town with air conditioning!!!

some really cool architectural details here that would warrant further study. very cool old church - also think it's a shame about the doors.

interesting bit of history .. i really hate the way, in certain times and places, certain ppl, because of their nationality, are made to feel like second class citizens .. its still happening in different places to different ppl ..
love the architecture of the church ..they sure built them beautiful back then !!:)

This is a beautiful old stone church and I agree about the ugly metal doors, thanks for not showing the inside remodel after your description of it being tacky. The history of the Mexican settlers and their plight in the church is touching and sad at the same time.

Thanks for the history on this. Love the spires and the brick (rock?) work of this. A lot of details in it. And, yes, those door have to go!

Oh darn...why did they put those doors on such a lovely building as this one? You should take some closer images of the brick work. Thanks for the interesting story!!

This is beautiful stonework in this building. I think that I would have left he cars in the shot. The photograph is very good. The metal and glass doors seem very out of place on such a fine looking and stylish stone building.
