Challenge: Six (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

Crazy week. Had a sermon to give on Sunday, dealing with flu since Wednesday and just had no time to really shoot anything for any challenge. This was taken while I was downtown a bit before Aidan had a doctors appointment. Thought I would see what was going on around 6th street. Pulled over to shoot the sign and this guy happened to be walking across. Works for me.

The editing may be a bit sloppy but I am pleased with the general effect. Had I not blurred the background the image would be just too busy. This brought the focus on the man and the sign.

I know this wont score high, but its a different kind of image for me. And that I am proud of. Hopefully at least a 5.5 though. That would be nice.

Now back to doing some more clean up on it before it goes up for vote.

This was my 2nd place image (my top pick finished 41st).
By the title I wondered if this was a CBUS shot and was surprised to see it was you, Tim, as you say it is a different kind of image for you.
The blur could have worked, especially with the sepia and the aspect ratio - it exudes a large format print feel.
But as has been said, the blurring was not executed as well as it needed to get top votes.
You should check out the Tiffen DFX package - it has a really great selective lens blur tool a la` Lensbabies.
Would be interesting to see the results it would have on your original.

Nice job, go CBUS! ;)

It was hard not to vote any semi-competent image in this challenge with a six. (Hopefully no one is going to come up with the idea of challenge: 10!). I gave yours a 7. I liked the everyday journalism of this image. As a purist, it's a pity the blur is not lens induced. But I can understand why you had to add it in.

Way underrated, had expected a ribbon for this. Must have been the blur ;-P

I like the concept for this image, but there really is so much in this image's background and foreground to distract the viewer.

the shallow dof/ blur is used so masterfully to focus and force our attention on the man crossing the street

Interesting blur of the background and forground to get that focus on the person's path. Seems very complex with the wires everywhere but hey, that's a city shot, right.

I like DOF and crisp focus, and I like the b&w conversion. Nice tone too.

This is a really good shot but there is a lot going on. I like the duotone to the image but blur doesn't look right. If you look close enough you can see where the blur line is and I think that is why it doesn't look natural.
