This is the main aisle of the crypt below the Baltimore Cathedral, built in the early 1800s. The lighting is clearly a more modern addition. I completely fell in love with the arches, the lighting, and the intersecting stone and brick detail off to the sides. This particular view is my favorite, but I loved exploring down there. I'm weird that way :-)

I was there with my daughter, who will be married in the cathedral proper upstairs (gilt and gorgeous) in 2009. I took some pictures of that, too, and the outside, which is apparently an architectural masterpiece ... but I liked the crypt best.

PP - converted from RAW, slight tilt and crop, levels, increased saturation on red/orange, added border, resized, sharpened with noise reduction, sharpened again.

Lines, form and color combine to make this place impressive. You've made a fine image here from start to finish. The difference in the foreground in the lower part adds quite a lot to the overall composition with the straight line from one side, and the angle line on the right.
There is a civil war fort out in the Gulf of Mexico that looks a lot like this inside the walls. It's one of my favorite places to visit.

This is an absolutely beautiful shot. Nice lighting, really crisp.

I haven't been to the Basilica since I was a kid and I went on a CCD field trip. Now you have me wanting to go back.

It's amazing how little you visit the things that are in your own back yard. I actually worked about a block and half from the basilica for about two years. I went to the library across the street a couple times, but never here.

Hooray, Mary! Way to get that new personal best! I was one of your 9s - just loved the arches, the color, and the repetition of the shapes. Congrats on the honorable mention, too!

beautiful lighting. Dark object on lefhand side, almost halfway up the picture steals a lot of attention though

A half of a step to your right as you photographed would make this on center and symmetrical. If it's not to be on center then, in my opinion, it need to be MORE off center to appear intentional. The DOF, sharpness, and color are wonderful.

Wow, I never imagined that 'plain ole brick' could be so cool! Nice soft tones here really compliment the red brick to me. Great job -BB

Very nice, although to complete the symmetry I would have moved a little closer so that you couldn't see the "exit" to the right side of the frame.
