I went out to shot this week for "framing" and had hoped to get a clear shot, using the bridge to frame the Wheeling downtown. But, I couldn't get a good angle and it started to snow. So, I shifted it to B&W. I have PS Elements 5.0. I messed with the shadows and highlights, contrast, a little dodge and burn. I used cloning and the healing brush on the sky to take some branches and overhead wires out.

The wires on the right are anchor cables. They run from anchors on the shore to the bridge to help prevent swaying in high winds.

Wheeling Bridge The link talks about high winds that destroyed the original span.

I like the tones and perspective. The gloomy overcast just adds to the looming presence of the bridge.

Are those troubled waters? :) Very nice - I can feel the chill in the air from this image.

Wow, can't imagine this shot working well in colour at all!!! It's a perfect black and white, seeing that you captured the gloomy weather adds alot of character

This picture really delivers the feeling of a gloomy day. Nice shot.

I don't know how you people up north put up with the winter. Being a Fla. native, if I get 3 days in a row of gloomy weather I start getting crazy.

You have successfully shown what a dreak day it was, without making the photo flat and dull. Someone comments that the photo evokes a feeling of despair, and that is something that I take away from this as well. An interesting photo.

Interesting shot. I like the lines and the low contrast gives it an old world feel.

Like the strong line of the bridge slicing diagonally through the picture.

I really like the perspective here, all the lines and angles. Just a bit of contrast would have made this really pop, I think.

I like the perspective and composition on this shot. The feel the lack of contrast and noise in the background adds an old feel to the photo, nicely done.

I like the perspective and composition of this photo a lot. There is good detail in the under structure of the bridge which adds to the interest. If anything, I think I'd increase contrast a little to help sharpen up some of the lines. I find it very difficult to get good black and whites in that kind of weather, but you've managed nicely.

I like the perspective you chose. And it has a misty quality that gives it an interesting mood.

Great shot and I love the under bridge perspective. I like the tones and the angles of this composition, but especially like the texture in the water.

Great angle and the snow adds just the right touch. At first I thought it was fog until I read your comments.

Very nice capture! It does look very nostalgic which adds to the atmosphere. I like your composition too.

Nice, I like the way this looks nostalgic. Good detail in the shadows under the bridge and on the right base of the bridge. Thanks!

Very very interesting. Texture of water and massive bridge pylon(?) om right foreground being more in focus or less obscured by precipitation quite strongly anchor a scene of many elements which contribute but don't compete/clash. (Managing multiple elements is a HUGE challenge for me). The sweet spot/icing on the cake is where the suspension cables turn from dark grey to almost white.

really like how the details of the bridge come out and mix with the fog.. like the mood of the picture..

I like how I can see the snow's motion faintly through out the image. I also like the element of the tree coming down into the frame on the right. Its a little crowded composition wise but I think it works. If I would have tried anything it would have been something dangerous like try and climb up on that bottom span on the right and shott from underneath the bridge. :P

Spans are good visual symbols. Dull days can be depressing - but I believe there is something in them of beauty which can be revealed by the photographer. Dull, grey is as much of a tool as popping colour... Things I learned from this photo.

I agree with the other comments that there should be more of the top. Probably stand a little bit more back... anyway.. it has a feel of gotham city to it with all the fog.

I think most points have been covered with this shot. I do agree with the earlier comment that there should me more at the top right to help you eye move around the image. I used to love Shadow/Highlight but now use it more sparingly as it often washes out the blacks, a little more contrast might bring the pop back. Nice shot btw :)

I like how the snow creates a feeling of dispair in the image - the angle of the bridge really draws my eye to the far side and the buildings all could be from a long ago time

Nice capture of a bleak and dreary day. You've conveyed the mood very well.

The composition is very good but something is just very slightly off for me. I've had it up on my screen now for nearly a half hour as I write this and try to figure out what it is that I̢۪m missing.

My eye is fist drawn very nicely down the leading line to the far end of the bridge. Then it returns along the line of the bridge but it stalls looking for more at the top of the frame. It eventually comes down the abutment but stalls again in the darkness of the foreground. I think I would've liked to see the entire frame brought up slightly. Not much, only enough to direct the center line of the bridge to the corner of the frame. This would reduce the amount of darkness in the foreground, expose some more of the superstructure of the bridge and bring the far side of the river a bit more off the centerline of the frame.

This critique is nit-picking at most. The shot is quite nice as is!

BTWâ€Â¦ Thanks for starting the challenge

Excellent start to the challenge; if this is any indication, I'm going to enjoy playing here (both posting and commenting). I think my favorite part of this is the way everything at the other end of the expanse is hinting at disappearing into the fog, but it's actually still there. Nice.

This reminds me of the one in Cincinnati. I like how you included the suspension arcing up in the background. Like others have said, I like how the haze adds to the mood of the photo.

Love the composition and leading lines. A slight bump in contrast would have made this even more dramatic. Very natural shot. Good work.

This is very dramatic, Bud. I'm a huge fan of cold winter gray days. I know most people who live in cold winters must think I'm crazy -- but in "always sunny" Texas, they are a welcome treat.

I love how you've composed this, and how the bridge tapers off into the mist. Beautiful!

I always like the way bad weather comes out in b/w. It many times does a better job of showing how dreary the weather really is. Nice job.

Interesting to me is the contrast between the sharp wires and details in the bridge rigging with the hazy river below.

I went to high school in West Virginia (Parkersburg) and this is very reminiscent of gray cold days there. I like the lines of the shot - the bridge itself from right to left. While "Western" convention prefers left to right, I do think that the opposite works well in photographs, as here.

I like the angle and the atmosphere here, just as if something can happen any moment. Overall it looks a little gray, but that's probably just the weather. Just puzzling a little about the wires in the sky from the bridge to the right. Where are they coming from or where are they going to...
