This was taken on a Sunday drive after work. The county that I live in has numerous Menonites (even has Eastern Menonite University) and I can find them by just going down the road. As soon as I saw the "Old Ways" challenge, getting a picture of a horse and buggy immediately came to mind. This is one of the earliest forms of transportation, definately an "Old Way".
Anyway, I really overexposed this shot. I was in the process of taking a backup picture of Archetecture in a night shot earlier that morning. I forgot about switching the camera back, realized it at the last second, switched it over to Av (instead of Tv) and this is what came out....still overexposed b/c I had the compensation set up to +2 and ISO at 1600. I tried to save this image b/c it was my favorite one of the day. If I had more daylight time, I would go out and get another pic.
Convert to grayscale, convert to duotone (sepia color), crop, slight levels histogram adjustment, shadows slight increase, highlights major increase, -5 brightness +5 contrast. another slight levels histogram adjustment, slight highlights increase, resize, and then unsharp mask
My opinion of this shot: I wish that I didn't overexpose it. This would have been an awesome shot if it was done right. You live, you learn....I'm still new at this.
Prediction 4.2 due to overexposure. |

Thanks for that post challenge post showing your work on this. It's interesting to see what someone was working from and the steps involved. Your own remarks indicate that my in-challenge comment was accurate. If this were advanced editing, you could make some selective adjustments to tone down the bright buildings in the background a bit. I also percieve a slight skew to the image. Easy to correct that. |

I photograph equines more than any other subject (not counting construction site progress photos, but that's a different story). As a horse person I appreciate that you caught this horse at the perfect moment during his trot stride. I wish we could see the detail of the horse's face a bit more - I bet he has a kind eye and a calm expression, judging by the relaxed set of his neck and his forward ears as he is checking you (and your camera) out. |

Just curious -- how'd the Amish feel about you taking their picture? Neat shot too! I like how the horse is looking at you. |

Cant get any more "old ways" than this! The bright background is a little distracting from the dark subject. |
