Late morning portrait session right after one of my classes at 180 Fitness. I was demonstrating for Jessica (and my portfolio) how lighting could change the texture of a portrait photo, especially in the mid-day sun. This one (as you can tell) was a backlighting shot that caught the rim lights with a high-key on top. Since I wasn't using flash, I decided to enhance her facial glow with an omni-light in PS Elements 6.0 or PS CS3-Extended. (I forget which because I have a try-out of both right now and am putting them through their paces.)

Steps (as best I recall): I don't remember cropping this one, but the contrast/brightness, enhanced saturation aided the transition then to Black & White. Despeckled, Reduced noise, Dust & Scratches, Spot Healing Tool, Sharpened edges, USM, Resized, Saved for Web...

i quite like the lighting on her hair - it really gives the image a nice shine, but it seems that there was not enough light on her face (either with fill flash or reflector). i am not sure that the post processing to lighten her face works here - it seems to make the light very flat and gray - and this doesn't seem consistent with the rest of the lighting in the photo.

I like this, it's well composed, though I would take the comments already made under consideration (I agree with Deb Melethia, as usual), too. It takes a lot of work to add light to an image, and this one doesn't quite work for me.

The backlighting does a great job on her hair, and your comp is just perfect. Perhaps a reflector to get a bit more light on her face would help brighten up her face a bit.

I do like the composition here! Fessica has an engaging smile and looks nice and relaxed to me. Definately think fill in flash or something reflective to bounce light back at her would have helped with the hair detail. And thanks for posting your editing steps, they always help me :)

Gee, Melethia already said it. But I also like hair haphazard across face as well as in highlights. Wonderful freshness.

Great portrait! Wonderful smile and her teeth look great. I agree with what Melethia said about the whitish look on the bridge of your model's nose. Overall tho, the facial glow looks good.

She has a great smile and very warm and engaging eyes! You should definitely shoot her more often. I'm not entirely sure I like the added light thing - it seems to be a little too "spotlightish" on the bridge of her nose. I really like the way the backlighting catches the edges of her hair, but you have quite the challenge with her to get detail in the rest of her hair because it's so dark.

The back lighting is perfect for this picture. I like how her dark hair frames the lighter face.

You've captured a great smile and I love that backlighting. As far as the logo on the shirt, you can crop as suggest or clone it out. Thanks for sharing your processing tips.

Engage the subject, engage the viewer. You remind me that these two things are sometimes hard to do, but you achieve it partially with the young lady's smile. The personal first person relations vs the impersonal distant third person observation. To make those two things come together requires thought, so your photo suggests to me.

You did some great ps work here. I still would like to seem more contrast. I feel like her eyes are lacking something.

Very pleasant portrait with nice smile. Don't have enough experience with portrait lighting to give any advice, but would crop off the lettering on bottom.

Nice job - it's difficult w/no flash or fill and the sun behind your subject. This is when wearing a white t-shirt really helps 'cause it bounces light for you! Good portrait and pretty subject.
