I shot this today (Feb. 3) as I thought the stream was pretty with the white birch and snow. I shot this with my new Point and Shoot (Lumix FZ-18). I shot this in the panoramic 9X16 size. For some reason there is dark areas on each side. I'm not sure why. I haven't had this happen with my Lumix LX1.
I left it as this B&W challenge is supposed to be "as shot".

Constructive comments appreciated. LG

i love how the birches are set off almost evenly along the stream. the two posts on the sides of the image are a bit distracting and I would crop them out a bit. i also agree with other posters about the white snow in the lower left overwhelming the image - a lower angle so to bring more of the trees into play while losing so much foreground might work here (for the next time!)

Lovely curve in the stream, the top of an "s" (very pleasing to the eye); I'm sure by now (I'm very late) you're taking advantage of the chance to fully edit your shots, and I agree with Andi that I'd love to see this river as the seasons move on.

As has been sa (many tis) yes yu can and should crop thiss and edit it? well, thats up to you ;) The snow seems overexposed and I tend to agree that croppin up to te waters edge bottom right would help the overall composition. Looks like you've found a great spot and will be interesting to see this location changing with the seasons.

The white birch and white snow combine to make a really pleasing high key lanscape. I know it would be a real pain, but I would love to see some true blacks in this to offset the true whites...I'm thinking burned branches and reflections...I know it would be a lot of work, but it would really increase the tonal range of this photo.

I agree with some of the other posters - the white expanse bottom left is a bit too much for me.

That said, I really enjoy the serenity of this shot - you've got some interesting textures running through that stream area

It is avery nice scene. I think if you crop the sides and about 1/2 an inch off the bottom. Boost the constrast a bit and it'll be a really good image.

Like this a lot. And do crop those sides, especially so I can see if I truly truly disagree with trevytrev about the white expanse, because it seems to work very well for me, balancing all the activity beyond. Delicious curves. (Look forward to more from the FZ18 - not too bad at ISO 200). T

nice scene, I'm not sure what that is on the sides either but I would crop it out of the frame. A bit of a raise of the camera to get a bit less of the white foreground and more river in the frame might help this a bit. The large white area distracts a bit.

I like the natural vertical lines created by the white birch trees and how they are coming up from a nice diagonal created by the stream. A bit more contrast may emphasize this effect even more.

I'm guessing that if you shot in panoramic mode your display was lopping off the sides. Just a guess. I think that the panoramic mode on camera just masks (or chops off) the top and bottom and you're not really using the full area of your sensor. If you shoot "regular" mode, then you have control over how to create the panorama.

Nice contrast between the snow and water. I also like how the waters edge has lots of texture from the brush and then the water is so smooth.

White and white, simple geometric curves, make for an elegant composition which contains the elements of illustration, your photo reminds me.

Very pretty scene. I love those trees! One thing I do when taking pictures is look at the composition and move myself around so I can get the rule of thirds in check and or leading lines. hehe..even if you have to get in the middle of that stream to get a good shot..haha..just kidding. That's the joy of being a professional. Just look for different areas were you think you can get a better composition.

Like the curve of the river and the birches very much. Agree with previous comments about snow being too bright and the fact that you can and should crop out the dark areas on the sides.

I'm not sure about the sides either - I'm not that familiar with the camera. But you are allowed to crop! You are allowed to edit as well - this is all for learning and there are no DQs. I like the starkness of the birches against the dark stream.

I'm not much for the snow (too hot) but I like the tone and contrast. The sides are a bit distracting - wonder why it did that? Thanks!

Composition is good, but the snow looks overexposed. Could use a boost in contrast to emphasise the trees a bit more.
