Taken at overcast early evening. It is really pretty flat, except for dark of the foliage and white of the snow. The light was very lousy. I did tweak the contrast, using levels and some sharpen technique quite a bit. Contrast seemed to be about the only tool that had any kind of graphic effect. Some detail has been subdued, partially through b&w conversion, but also by the contrast work especially some of the red reeds in the central darkest areas of the picture.

this one almost seems like two images - the top image that is bright and alive and the bottom that is burned and decaying

The tree with snow sure stands out. I am not sure I like the darkness right below it though, I feel like there isn't enough definition in it and maybe detracts from the main element a bit.

Excellent job. It's very tough to isolate complexity within complexity and this works extremely well.

hmmm, have looked at this for a while now trying to decide if I like it or not. I do think its been 'played with' a little too much and almost looks like 2 images - I much prefer the top half and would consider a big crop (though that waould probably not be your intended effect).

Took a quick wander through your portfolio, some stunning images and many deserving of large prints :)

I love the tree. It looks like it's been highlighted with a white paint brush. The bottom texture doesn't do anything for me. It kind of detracts from the beauty and smoothness of the tree.

I like the abstract quality of this shot, it almost looks like the grass had been burnt by the tree. I would like to see more of the top of the tree in the shot.

Some of the detail may have been subdued, as you say, but the end result is quite marvelous to my eye. The snowed shape of the tree rising from the darkness is really quite striking.

It has an apocalyptic feel to it - sort of abstract, sort of not. I like the boldness of this image.

Some excitement here, but a bit all over the place. (Original would provoke possibly more helpful comment).

Very much of an abstract feel - a bit too much dark in the grass for my liking.

I like the textures and abstract quality. Wish the little tree didn't break the symmetry. LG

Sorry but on my monitor it looks like a big dark splotch in the middle of the photo. Nice textures at the top of the photo and bottom.

Interesting picture.. each portion has some new textures.. probably would have liked it more if you'd taken it from a lower angle.. then more of the tree and the grasses? would have melded better..

Textures are powerful subject matter, you remind me. They can set a viewer on edge, relax them, mesmerize them with repetition etc. Textures have associations and are an interesting tool with which to compose images.

I am not a fan of a tree up close but this one has a great forground which adds great interest to the photo. I am wondering if you added to much contrast to the shot and it made it loss some detail.
